Resources Agency Consolidation Project

Resources Agency Consolidation Project

Working with an accomplished design team led by the architects Pickard Chilton of New Haven, CT, the landscape-based project directly addresses the unique pivotal position of the Resources Agency, which works to simultaneously balance demands on California’s natural resources with the need and desire to freely access and use these resources. Water is a defining element in the park. A zero run-off site, all precipitation is captured and stored in either a lush, above ground storm-water garden or in a large underground cistern. The stored water in the underground cistern irrigates culturally important features in the park, addressing the significance of agriculture and recreation to the history of the California landscape. Water also defines the site itself, located along the Sacramento River, where the existing riparian edge of the river has been extended beyond the set-back zones and into the Resources site and broadening the opportunity for habitat and species regeneration. A bike path running through this extended riparian landscape provides access to a kayak launch and connects the park to the larger network of parks and recreational trails in the Greater Sacramento area. Space has been set aside to design a demonstration garden specifically geared to the visiting public and school groups looking to learn more about the mission of the Resources Agency and the natural resources of California.
