Sausalito Residence

What started as a solution for the drainage problems created by an underground stream slowly transformed this Sausalito cottage into a chic contemporary escape. By wrapping the base of the house and reconfiguring the architectural stairway, decking and fencing with Ipe hardwood, the entire entry experience into the residence was made more simple and more inviting. To compliment the new porch and stair assembly as well as the historic character of the home, a low, linear transparent fence was designed to provide some separation between the public right of way and private garden. Changing the overall color of the home enhanced the relationship of the building’s historical detail with the new, cleaner lines of the entry design. Bamboo planting flanks the stairway, softening the architectural edges of the project and improving the privacy of the porch and garden. Mexican feather grass on either side of the fence and a sculptural Japanese maple at the entry add the finishing touches to make this second home a perfect retreat.
