UCSF Kirkham Childcare Center Located on the steeply sloping base of Mount Sutro, this new childcare facility for the UCSF Medical Center has a multi-level yard that creates features out of views and changing vantage points. Children perceive privacy and enclosure in tunnels, caves, and a bamboo forest; while overlooks, climbing rocks and a climbing tower give them a chance to reach the sky. Durable materials such as brightly colored perforated panels allow varying degrees of transparency while corrugated steel bends to form walls and shelves. Tricycles race along the ramp connecting the upper and lower areas. Salvaged materials form a new wooden fence and connect the new play yard with the surrounding area.
